Garden Attraction – The Butterfly Estates

The Butterfly Estates is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in downtown Fort Myers, Florida, dedicated to protecting and preserving Florida’s native butterfly species. Located at 1815 Fowler Street and affiliated with the Florida Native Butterfly Society, the facility presents itself as an educational institution rather than an entertainment venue, focusing on conservation and public learning.

The organization hand-raises butterflies from the egg through the chrysalis stage and releases emerged butterflies through a live chrysalis window display, with typical releases ranging from one to more than 40 butterflies depending on seasonal conditions. The facility does not house exotic species and instead concentrates on native populations. It provides educational tours, classes, and outreach programs centered on butterfly life cycles and the importance of butterflies as pollinators, and it emphasizes that its butterflies serve breeding-program purposes rather than visitor entertainment, noting that it does not provide fruit for butterflies to land on guests.

Funding comes exclusively from admission fees and private donations, with the organization receiving no government support. Military members, excluding spouses and children, receive free admission. Beyond daily visits, The Butterfly Estates hosts special events including butterfly weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, birthday parties, school groups, community outings, and photography and garden club gatherings. Its wedding and event services are described as affordable and tax deductible, with the organization citing a best price for weddings in Southwest Florida.

Operating hours vary by season: November through May the facility is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., while June through October hours run Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The facility closes early during high heat index conditions and observes closures on Easter, July 4th, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Free secured gated parking is available on Hough Street behind the shops, and the organization can be reached at 239-690-2359.
